With all of the talk about the lack of employment and the difficulty of finding employment the real solution always seems to be left out if the discussion. Politician after politician will clamor the need for “jobs, jobs and more jobs” all while turning a blind eye to a solution that will clearly provide measureable results.
And what would this easy and rapid solution be? Deporting illegal immigrants and letting those jobs be filled by the unemployed.
Legal immigration is also a source as well. Last year over 1,000,000 green cards were issued allowing legal employment. In addition 100,000 hi tech H1-B visas were allowed. Working in high technology myself I have seen the direct end result of H1-B visas. The net result is lowered wages by around 50%.
In addition the government also allows a form of visas called OPT. A good description of this is from the Center For Immigration Studies.

While on the Wall Street Journal article, it discusses the decline in the number of H-1B visas in recent years. However, it never mentions "optional practical training" or OPT. Until recently, DHS permitted people on student visas to work under OPT for one year after they graduated. In 2008, DHS changed its regulations to allow people in technology fields to work for up to 29-months (with 35 months possible for fall graduates).
DHS's regulatory-created OPT guestworker program not only permits people who are not students to work on student visas, but also does so without any worker protections whatsoever. DHS does not require these workers to be paid at all, let alone the prevailing wage.
Under OPT, employers have:
- A work period nearly as long as for an H-1B visa
- No requirements to pay the prevailing wage
- No requirements to protect domestic workers.
From a study of these facts the real problem is quite clear. Our accepted and unquestioned policy of open borders and legal immigration has saturated our employment markets resulting in a market unable to absorb all of the new workers. The result is high unemployment as a direct result of government policy encouraging immigration legal and illegal during a time of a economic downturn.
The solution is clear and obvious. The ability of both Republicans and Democrats to do what is right for the American people is not so obvious. The obvious solution is to reduce immigration until the employment market levels out.
The only solution will be for Americans to stand up for their nation against both the Republicans and Democrats and seek to reduce legal and illegal immigration. Pursuing a policy that is proven to weaken and undermine our financial stability is complete foolishness. It is time to call our political leaders of both parties to account for this. The time for realistic and practical solutions is clearly now.
