With the recent discovery of pressure cookers as a component of the Boston Marathon bombing and their being used in attempted bombings elsewhere President Obama needs to begin a full court press in the media to alert the American public to the dangers of non federally regulated pressure cookers.
Pressure cookers have been freely available under the US Constitution for years and are in many US homes. Pressure cookers can be freely purchased with out a license or a background check. The first step President Obama should take is a national registration and background check of all current pressure cooker owners. Laws regulating the possession and ownership of pressure cookers have been lax so pressure cookers have been falling in to the hands of criminals.
There are those who would argue that most pressure cooker owners and users are law abiding citizens whose intent is for cooking. However a significant used market in pressure cookers does exist and many pressure cookers can be sold or exchanged freely at kitchen shows or in private sales.
There are certain types of pressure cookers that are far more dangerous than others. Congress should label specific pressure cookers to differentiate then from the less dangerous ones. These could be labeled as “assault pressure cookers”.
Pressure cookers certainly have a place in a kitchen but not on our streets. Since they have become criminalized our children and society is at risk.
“Assault pressure cookers” are clearly a danger to society and need to be banned regardless. Let us hope that President Obama, the media and Congress will take time off from their busy schedule of attempting to bypass the US Constitution to ban guns to face a real issue of pressure cookers at hand.
